June 26th was a great day for our Nation with with Section 3 of DOMA being struck down and with Prop 8 being ruled unconstitutional. Truly a giant step in the right direction. However, June 26th will also be a day I will never forget.
At 2:05PM, my beautiful grandmother Vilma "Willie" Lively Palmisano passed away in her sleep after suffering from kidney and heart failure. Fortunately, I was able to see her at the hospital just 5 days prior before she was let go with hospice care. It was only a matter of time, but I didn't imagine it would happen so quickly. I made sure that she heard my new song "Our Love" (as I am so proud of it). I couldn't imagine how I would feel if she had never heard it. It brought me so much joy to see her tapping her toes to the beat in her hospital bed and then to hear her say "You should put that on iTunes!" We shared a good two hours of conversation, bringing up our affinity for Housewives and Wendy Williams, and how she promised she would do her best to get Ellen to hear "Our Love". She said that she was friends with her on Facebook :)
Although we hit a rough patch a few years ago which stifled our relationship, I will only remember the good times and all the good qualities she instilled in me. I'll never forget how she would say my name - "Jaaawshhhewaah" - or how she would always say "Listen - Let me tell you somethin' ". That voice of hers will remain embedded in my mind.
I still can't believe she is gone. It's a strange feeling - albeit we all know that the day eventually comes.
I miss her so much and I pray that she will watch over me and my family and see how our destiny will unfold. She was a great woman and role model to me.
And with a line from "Our Love" - "Our love will go on forever...listen to our melody". I love you Maw!
